Introduction to Distribution Panels
The electrical distribution panel is the backbone of any electrical system. Its correct design ensures operational safety and protects equipment and people from electrical hazards.
IEC 61439 Requirements
- IP Protection rating: IP31 minimum for indoor environments, IP54 for outdoor locations
- Rated current: From 63A to 6300A depending on load
- Short-circuit withstand capacity (Icc): Must exceed the highest possible short-circuit current at the point
- Temperature rise: Not to exceed 70°C for internal electrical components
Key Calculations
Load Current Calculation
I_load = P_total / (√3 × V_L × PF × η)
Where: P = total power (W), V_L = line-to-line voltage (380V), PF = power factor (0.85), η = motor efficiency
Protection Circuit Breaker Selection
| Load Rated Current | Proposed MCB/MCCB | Proposed Cable |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 16A | MCB 16A | 2.5mm² NYY |
| 16 – 32A | MCB 32A | 6mm² NYY |
| 32 – 63A | MCCB 63A | 16mm² NYY |
| 63 – 125A | MCCB 125A | 50mm² NYY |
